Step-by-Step Process to Empower Lives
Comprehensive Training for Mental Health Service Dogs
Selection of the Right Dog
Training starts with choosing dogs that are calm, friendly, and eager to learn. Each dog undergoes a health evaluation to ensure they are fit for service.
Basic Obedience Training
The dog learns fundamental commands like sit, stay, and come, and is socialized in various environments to ensure proper behavior in different settings.
Public Access Training
Dogs are trained to stay calm and focused in public, navigating spaces like restaurants and stores without causing disruptions, and following commands despite distractions.
Task-Specific Training
Dogs learn specific tasks tailored to their handler’s needs, such as interrupting self-harming behaviors, providing deep pressure therapy, and retrieving medications, ensuring reliable performance in different scenarios.
Handler Training:
The focus is on building a strong bond between the dog and handler. Handlers learn to give commands, reinforce training, and maintain the dog’s skills, addressing any behavioral issues that arise.
Certification and Ongoing Support
The dog is evaluated for certification as a service dog. Post-certification, ongoing support and training updates ensure the dog continues to meet the handler’s needs and maintains their skills.
